The INHOUSE Venue Technical Management (IVTM) team operating within the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) recently had the privilege of being the preferred supplier for the Inaugural Ubuntu Awards Gala Dinner, a premier event hosted by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) on the 14th of February 2015 in the CTICC.

The aim of this prestigious annual awards ceremony is to recognise South African industry leaders and eminent persons for their contribution to promoting South Africa’s national interests and values across the world.

The event required a diversity of services and Gearhouse Group ended up doing what they do best - using a single contact, multi-disciplined approach, which saw four of the companies within the Group collaborating to supply the event with a holistic service.

To ensure the awards were of the calibre expected by the client, the IVTM team facilitated the design and build of a custom set utilising the skills of Sets, Drapes, Screens (SDS), the Group’s set construction company, together with bespoke stage and set designer, Formative.

The concept included a giant replica of the actual UBUNTU Award (a globe cupped in open hands, resembling a tree) as well as over two metre high cut-outs of the word UBUNTU, which technical supplier, Gearhouse South Africa, brought to life using cutting edge technology such as 3D mapping software and 4 CHRISTIE HD20K and 3 CHRISTIE HD14K-M Roadster projectors on an SDS wide screen setup.

A flown truss, loaded with a lighting rig designed to embrace all aspects of the venue, complemented the overall look of the event. The design created the desired effects for the set, stage and dance floor and fulfilled the brief to use three different colour areas to demarcate the different seating areas.

This was tied into the registration system provided by Gearhouse ICS, ensuring that guests’ seating allocation was colour-coded in the same way and enabling audience members to easily find their tables.

Attendees included President Zuma, The Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Ministers, Premiers, Deputy Ministers, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Captains of Business and Industry and Senior Government Officials. Awards were presented to organisations/individuals that have, through excellence, innovation, creativity, social responsibility and patriotism, distinguished themselves as true South African ambassadors.
