Mandela day 67 minutes initiative at Rena Le Lona Creative Centre for Children.

The Gearhouse Academy interns prepared and took a small Audio system to Rena Le Lona Creative Centre for Children in Diepkloof as part of a 67 mins initiative for the Gearhouse Group which included the handover of a donation for the Centre from systems integration specialists, Gearhouse System Solutions.

Rena Le Lona, We are with you, is an emotional healing centre for children who have lost their parents to AIDS. Through releasing their grief and accessing their potential, each child has a chance to lead a meaningful and fulfilled life. A small staff complement - consisting of an Executive Director, a Centre Manager, a House Mother, 3 kitchen and cleaning staff, an administrator, seven full-time coaches and four part-time coaches - works tirelessly to meet the personal, intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual needs of Sowetan and other South African orphans by nurturing their creativity through the Arts.

The artwork on the walls of the art room testifies to the talent being nurtured at Rena Le Lona, but when the children arrived back from school and found the Audio system set up and waiting, the Gearhouse representatives on site were treated to the full spectrum of singing, dancing and drumming as the children spontaneously performed for the gathering. It was truly heart-warming to see how they progressed from tentative sounds, to belting out songs over the sound system.

After the donation handover and a wonderful thank you from the children, the Gearhouse team stayed on into the afternoon, entertaining the children. The visit has left the Gearhouse team with a whole new perspective on how the creative arts can change lives and in complete awe of the dedication and care offered by this centre to their community.

We look forward to working with Centre Manager Ayanda Kubheka and Rena La Lona Founder and Creative Director Michelle Friedman on a concert showcasing these children later on in the year.
