West coast-born Jaques Fouche is the latest addition to the Cape Town branch's Sales team, but it has been quite a journey to get to where he is now.

On completing his schooling, he moved to Cape Town and took on a position in market research whilst trying to decide what career path to embark on. "At that tender age, I had no clear vision of the path I wanted to take in life." he muses. "The only thing I knew for sure was that I really like being around people and discovering what makes them tick."The digital age was booming and his involvement in research meant that he got to work very closely with big corporates determining what the market's technological needs were - a background that proved very useful when he joined Gearhouse."

In the interim, however, the constant exposure to technology led Jaques to study Graphic Web Design. "Close to the end of my studies I realized that I would never cope with being confined to an office staring at a computer all day long. So I did what all "Saffers" did in the early part of 2000 and went off exploring British soil." He spent 2 years working and travelling through the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

On his return, Jaques spent some time working as a Sales rep for a vehicle rental company that specialised in servicing the TV, Film & Event industry. This is where he realised that he had a particular affinity for the events industry. However the travel bug was not yet out of his system and Jaques and his girlfriend left SA again - this time for Taiwan where they spent 3 years teaching English and again exploring Asia as much as possible. The relationship flourished abroad and they married whilst in Taiwan. The couple have now been back in SA for 2 years.

"When the opportunity at Gearhouse presented itself, I grabbed it with both hands. I was already very aware of the company's presence in the industry and who better to work for than the industry leader?'' he laughs.

It’s been a steep learning curve, filled with challenges of all descriptions, but Jaques is adamant that he enjoys every minute of it. "The people in this industry are extremely interesting and working with them is anything but predictable."

A true outdoorsman, Jaques believes in a well-balanced lifestyle and sets time aside to run, hike, camp and braai with friends when he is not onsite at the latest event.

Not content with what he has achieved so far since joining the Gearhouse Group, Jaques has plans to further his studies in 2012. "I’ve realised my passion for the Sales and Marketing industry and have now enrolled to study for a BA Business Administration part-time, which I’m sure will be a new balancing act all in its own. Life is too short to waste doing what you don't enjoy; whether it be work-related or on a social level. I am loving the ride!"
