Speak to Jana Duvenhage, Sales Executive at the Cape Town branch of Gearhouse SA, for more than 10 minutes and it becomes clear that she is not one to sit around and wait for things to happen in her life. If things are not happening fast enough, she will get up and make them happen!

With a very clear path defined for herself within the company, Jana prefers to benchmark her performance at a national level. “By Oct 2014, I want to be at a level where I compete with everyone else in the company on total sales. I aim to be the top sales person eventually and I would love to be in sales management in a few years’ time but with a strong focus on customer relations and staff development where I can use my passion for Life Coaching.”

She says the move to Gearhouse developed her skills very quickly as she had to adjust to working on a completely different scale of client base and event size. “It has been a period of enormous emotional growth. My previous work environment was small and comfortable but I have since learnt that comfort is not what you should be looking for in the workplace. I have had to learn to hold my own in a mix of many different personalities, in an office of extremely driven people. The environment keeps me constantly challenged and that is what makes me grow as a person.”

Jana started her working life at UNISA in 1990 and then moved to Johannesburg to work for the Attorney General. Here she managed the Supreme Court Roll and acknowledges that she made a significant impact there within the first year.

Her first step towards a career in sales, however, only began after that. She started selling at a small IT company, followed by a period doing truck hire sales at Barloworld and then a stint at Cozens Recruitment where she managed high profile contracts for companies like Deloitte and Touche and Johannesburg Technicon, “After a while, I opened my own recruitment company. I ran that for a few years, but I soon realised that recruitment was simply not the right industry for me. I was looking for something busier and more exacting” she laughs.

2004 was a turning point in Jana’s career. She joined AVStage, a Johannesburg equipment rental company, once again in a sales capacity. It was not long, of course, before she became involved in Operations there as well and ended up as General Manager.

However, she craved exposure to bigger projects and wanted to work in a larger company. By the time she joined Gearhouse in October 2012 she knew she had found what she loved to do. It has been a rollercoaster couple of years but Jana feels she has found her niche. “I have a keen interest in Life coaching and personal development on all levels, so my time at Gearhouse and the resultant personal growth is confirmation for me that I am on the right path”

Other than that Jana is an excellent dressmaker “when time allows” as well as an animal lover and spends as much time on the beach as possible in the company of her long-time partner Hannes and her two dogs.
