The Hilton Durban recently announced the appointment of their new General Manager, Markus Fritz. Mr Fritz has worked at a number of hotels in Europe, the UK and South Africa, including the Hilton Cape Town City Centre. As part of his welcome to Hilton Durban, combined with an opportunity to show case the “work in progress” of the lobby refurbishment, a cocktail event was held at the end of February, with numerous dignitaries, press and hospitality role players in attendance.

In keeping with the “construction site” theme, the waitering staff was decked out in hard hats and high visibility vests. Health and safety signs and construction equipment formed part of the “décor.” INHOUSE Venue Technical Management’s Hilton Durban team, led by Venue Technical Manager, Ravi Parak, had been on board from the inception phase, and were proud to sponsor all technical for the event.

“The challenge with this function,” said Ravi, “was to provide equipment that would enhance the look of the venue, without detracting from the theme. Moreover, the construction work for the day only ended at 15h00, leaving us with a relatively short load in time. In the end, we decided ‘less is more’, and took the decision to use the technical elements mainly to reinforce the Hilton brand. We up-lit the walls and ceiling in a wash of the Hilton corporate blue and used gobos of the Hilton Durban logo to do a slow scan of the area providing a backdrop for the speeches and formalities. The foyer areas can be reverberant, so we kept the band as acoustic as possible and set up a distributed PA system and an AV screen on which to project looping logos and adverts.”

Hilton Durban management were impressed with the technical service provided by IVTM. The General Manager’s office commented: “You guys did an exceptional job last night, and made our new GM, Markus Fritz, very proud”.

With the current work on the lobby being the first project in a multiphase refurbishment plan, big things are anticipated for the Hilton Durban. IVTM is proud to be associated with this venue and is looking forward to a long and happy partnership, contributing to the 5 star service the venue is renowned for.
